Alfred R. Waud was a artist-correspondent for Harper's Weekly during the Civil War. He spent the post war years touring the West as a staff artist for this magazine.

The gala event of 1870 at the Jersey Shore was the inauguration of racing at Monmouth Park. In this illustration Waud caught the excitement and the spectacle of opening day
