This Thomas Nast scene resembles a large valentine as it portrayed the love between a wife looking up at the moon and praying for her husband in the left oval while he, on picket duty in front of a camp-fire, gazed longingly at photographs of his family.
Santa was preparing to go down the chimney with gifts for their sleeping children, while distributing packages (upper right) to the troops. Below, the vignettes of soldiers marching, graves, and ships patrolling in a storm emphasized the realities of military life.

The Same Old Christmas Story Over Again

A Thomas Nast reproduction drawing on the theme of Christmas depicting nursery rhyme vignettes as well as vignettes of the United States military throughout. In the center of the lower portion of this illustration Nast depicted Santa Claus with his sleigh and reindeer ready to deliver his large sack of gifts. The gifts that Santa Claus is set to deliver show the patriotic theme of the United States flag and a drum and bugle that would have been used by the military. You can see one drum on his back and one more among the presents in his sleigh.

This Civil War Christmas image by Thomas Nast depicts Santa Claus as a smaller figure coming out of the fireplace and kneeling on a chair to make sure the children are asleep before he leaves the Christmas gifts on Christmas Eve. The main vignette in the center depicts a soldier’s reunion with his family as he returns home from war to celebrate the holiday. Title printed under image reads "Christmas, 1863".
